Dear Barb and family, I am so sorry to hear of Hughie’s passing. He was a wonderful friend to the entire Snell family. I remember many an evening at my parents’ house having a laugh with Hughie when he stopped by. All of us, my parents, siblings, and cousins, adored him. I’m sending you love and strength now, and wishes that we’ll see each other again sometime when we visit St A next (my husband and I now
live in Lunenburg, NS). Xoxoxo Tricia Snell

I am shocked to hear of Hughie’s passing; we were just emailing each other a week or so ago when Hurricane Lee was hearing down on the bay. All was well, he assured me. First off my deepest condolences to Barb, their family and all the children and grandchildren. Next, I want to extend my gratitude for Hughie’s decades-long friendship to our family. He was one of my father’s closest friends and anyone who remembers R.H. Craig will immediately understand what that friendship would have meant. My father was a complicated man and Hughie was steadfast and loyal. They shared a love of history and Hughie listened to hours of oration from this colourful raconteur. I can say that; I am my father’s only child!
I knew Hughie from childhood and was among the many he kept in touch with through daily emails. I shall miss knowing he was always there, a constant in life. He filmed a video of our family’s history, put together a photo album and fished out silver trophies I had tossed in the trash, only to present me with a box of them and other memories years later with the simple explanation, “I thought you’d want these someday.” He was right.
Hughie, you were one of a kind and I’m privileged to have been your friend. We shall not see your like again.

Thank you for the many messages of condolence - several have asked me what the R in Hugh's middle name stands for. He was named after our uncle Ronald Graneek, an RAF pilot during WW2 who was married to aunt Chris.. Hugh Ronald Graham. We will miss him so much - it is going to take a long time to get used to no emails from Hughie.. our family historian and character!

My condolences to Barb, Hugh's children and Chris. He was a St. Andrews icon and an extended Ross family member it seems. Countless memories of Grahamer around the kitchen table at 78 King and the camp at Kerr's Lake where he frequently recorded weather data and trivia not only in the priceless log book, but also in the outhouse and on birch trees throughout the woods. As a youngster, he always cheered me on in golf tournaments and we once played 18 holes in St. Andrews in one hour and forty minutes..... walking. No doubt he recorded that in his journal. Thanks for all the memories, Hugh, that continue to bring smiles! Jim Ross

Barb and family, so sorry to hear of Hughie’s passing. We always enjoyed running into him around town, his car window down, the dog waiting to say hello and Hughie ready to chat about most anything: hockey, golf and kids. We still have some of those seasonal letters he wrote. Our sincere condolences.

We have only the very best memories of Hughie. He was always ready for a chat and we enjoyed many stories over the years. He was one of first people we met when we arrived in St.Andrews in 1985, and he was so welcoming.
We shared his love of goldens and we were always happy to talk about our dogs.
We send our love to Barb, Ellen, and the rest of his family and friends. He was a special person, and will be missed.

From my tiny youth and through all of the big years of St. Andrews hockey, games became 'real' with Grahamer at the referee helm. Either from the ice as a player of the games he 'managed', from hanging over the penalty box cover screaming at who-knows-what, or standing on top of railings to see over packed bleachers, watching this 'ref' skill of managing a packed house was a true wonder, and the town and beyond was blessed to call Hugh a St. Andrewser. He didn't just ref, he read the whole building of coaches, players, and fans, and knew how to make a game fair; that's talent.
Then there's the golf course, the public man at the center of town....the home made bread.....and so much more...

Our deepest condolences and sympathy go out to Hughies family and friends. I have too many memories than there is space to share. He helped me in many ways as a young person in St. Andrews and was a great supporter of my developing comedic career. His ability to tell a story influenced my story telling ways. Many a time at Faulty Towers! Thanks for everything Grahamer, you always were and always will be One Of A Kind! Jeff, Kim and Jane, the Irwins.

Throughout my CBC interview a year ago on the 50th anniversary of the Summit Series, I was thinking about Hugh.
We had not met until we both boarded the Russian Aeroflot plane to Moscow. My friends had been booked on Air Canada and I did not know a soul.
Hugh changed that.
He was the major domo, the leader of the pack with a Canadian flag tattooed on his heart.
Some of his hijinks caught the Russians off guard and one time on Red Square they tried to hustle him off to jail for taking pictures of the Kremlin! A bunch of us stopped it, though the film was ripped out of his camera by our 'hosts.'
I am finding it hard to write about Hugh in the past tense.
He was a wonderful friend who wrote me almost weekly and I will remember him as long as I live.
To Barb and his extended family please accept our very deepest sympathy at this sad time.

Barb and family I am still heartbroken on the unexpected passing of Hughie. He was my favorite visit every summer for Seafood Chowder, Monkey bread, Red Wieners and sitting on the couch with an after dinner drink listening to him share anecdotes of my youth and family history. He is not only an icon to St Andrews he was an icon to me with his daily emails, his Happy Birthday cards, singing Oh Cindy Oh Cindy, he never gave up on me. Love forever Hughie, rest in peace and may you leave your family filled with the spirit of knowledge and family values.

There will be so many laughs, unlaughed, because Hughie is not there with his never-ending humor. There are so many stories, unheard, because Hughie is not there to tell them. There are so many memories, unremembered, because Hughie is not there to remind us.
He was an original, and like all originals, he can never be replaced and we feel honored to have had him in our lives.
Whether he was in your life by blood, love or friendship, his loss is felt deeply. Our lives that will never be quite as bright, without him there. We will miss his emails, his poignant thoughts and his ‘joie de vivre’ for so many things.
To his family, know that you are not alone… all of Los Andrews feels your loss.

With your sudden passing on 18 September you have certainly created a huge void for so many. We shall all miss you terribly but will have wonderful, fun and happy memories of HRG! Our friendship began almost 70 years ago and your untimely demise was and still is such a shock that will heal with time ! Your weekly trivia was second to none and I always looked forward to my daily emails and texts.! You were certainly one of a kind and your passing marks the end of an era for "Los Andrews"!
No doubt you've already played a few rounds "up there" and don't forget your famous shot with your "toe 8 iron"!

I am beyond shocked by Hughie's sudden passing....as he was in my Shop two weeks ago. He was such a friendly, upbeat guy...with a great sense of humour, and an abundant supply of historical, weather related, and personal, trivia....supplied by his many years of personal journals. He always enjoyed updating me on the changes in the lives of his family. Hughie was always kept me 'on the hunt' for my "shiniest Toonie"...which he used as a Golf marker. Christmas won't be the same without him, for many people. I received my own personal letter from S.C. one year! I will greatly miss seeing Hughie, and his faithful sidekick, Winnie. Sending my deepest sympathy to all of you, and his many friends, at this very difficult time. He will be well remembered. Take good care....
