Obituary of Wilfred M. Carter

CARTER, WILFRED M. - at the Charlotte County Hospital on Wednesday, March 18th, 2009; Dr. Wilfred MacKenzie Carter, husband of Pauline Carter of St. Andrews, NB. Born in Gaspe, Quebec he is the son of the late Kingsley James & Elsie (Patterson) Carter. A veteran of World War 2 Wilfred served as a very young man with Canadian Armed Forces. Returning Home he attended Mount Alison University receiving his Bachelor of Science degree. He gave serious consideration to becoming a Physician so he went on to attend McGill University later changing his faculty to Marine Science. He worked for many years with the Atlantic Salmon Federation as their Executive Director from 1968 until his retirement 10 years ago. Wilfred was a recipient of the Order of Canada. He also received honorary degrees from Mount Alison and UNB Fredericton. In 1976 the University of New Brunswick recognized his achievements by awarding him a Doctor of Science degree, honoris causa. In 2002 Outdoors Canada magazine named Dr. Carter one of the 30 Canadians who have had the biggest impact on hunting, fishing and conservation in Canada since 1972; previously having recognized him in 1987 as one of the 15 Canadians who had done the most for environmental and wildlife issues. He served on several boards and committees while residing in St. Andrews and was a member of All Saints Anglican Church. Surviving in addition to his wife Pauline are his daughter Susan Carter of Calgary and his son Brent Carter of Chamcook, NB, brother Bernard of Gaspe and one sister Betty Teeple of Thunder Bay, Ontario, 1 brother in law Stanford ( Mary) Baird of Toronto, Ont, 1 sister in law Connie Carter of Victoria, BC, several nieces , nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by one brother Al. By Wilfred’s request there will be no visitation at the funeral home however friends and relatives are welcomed to attend a memorial service in celebration of his life at All Saints Anglican Church, 77 King Street, St. Andrews on Monday, March 23rd, 2009 at 2:00 pm. A reception will immediately follow in the church hall. The interment will take place in the spring at the Memorial Gardens of the Chapel of Ease, Chamcook, NB. In lieu of flowers donations to the All Saints Anglican Church Memorial Fund or charity of the donors’ choice would be appreciated by the family.
