Obituary of Lelia DeWolfe Wren
Wren, Lelia DeWolfe – Passed away peacefully on Monday February 11, 2008 at the Passamaquoddy Lodge in St. Andrews, N.B. in her 101st year. Beloved sister of Bessie Medcof and Josephine Calder. Predeceased by her sister Frances Wren, her father Captain Ranby Wren, and her mother Frances Ina Wren. Remembered warmly by nieces Mary Guinan (Tom),Sue Medcof, nephews John W. Medcof (Irene),Ranby Medcof, and Hugh Calder (Elaine). Fond great-aunt of John T. (Jennifer Chang), Anne (James Grant) and Thera Medcof; and Brianna and Joshua Calder. Great-great-aunt of Eva and Isabelle Medcof. Lelia was born on August 10, 1907 in Bootle, England (near Liverpool), her father’s base as a sea captain. In 1918, after the Great War, the family returned to St. Andrews where Lelia and her three sisters grew up. After graduating from the Charlotte County Grammar School, Lelia attended the Montreal General Hospital School of Nursing, beginning in 1929. Upon graduation in 1931 she went to work at the Alexandra Hospital in Montreal. Lelia spent her 42 year career at the “Alexandra”, finding particular fulfillment in working with children, and was internationally recognized for her work with children with polio. In 1973 she retired and returned to St. Andrews, living in the family home on Queen Street and participating in the life of the town. Lelia will be remembered for integrity, grace, independence and her insistence on working hard in her profession and her personal life. Lelia’s middle name, DeWolfe, was given in honour of the DeWolfe family whose members had a warm relationship with the Wrens. A memorial service will be held at All Saints Anglican Church in St. Andrews, NB when the family will all have a chance to be here together to celebrate Lelias' life The service will be conducted at 11:00 am on Friday, July 4th, 2008, followed by a reception in the church hall. An interment will take place in St. Andrews Rural Cemtery. Donations to the Passamaquoddy Lodge, St. Andrews or to All Saints Anglican Church Building Fund would be greatly apprciated by the family.
