Obituary of Peter & Geraldine Maher
MAHER, Geraldine Margaret (1938-2024) and Peter Joseph (1938-2024)
It is with heaviest hearts and great love that the family of Margaret Geraldine Maher (nee Caples) and Peter Joseph Maher of St. Stephen, N.B. announces that both passed away at Charlotte County Hospital in St. Stephen, NB. Geraldine (Gerry) passed away August 18, 2024, and Peter passed away shortly afterwards on August 30, 2024.
Both are survived by their 4 children, Francis William, Cold Lake, AB.; Peter Joseph (with wife Cheryl), Thornton, ON.; Catherine Louise, North York, ON. and Robert Stanley, Oakville, ON. They are also survived by their seven grandchildren – Carly, Tayler, Samantha, Chelsea, Cameron, Logan, and Joshua, and 4 great-grandchildren. Gerry is also survived by one sister, Marianne Caples, Bocabec, NB. Peter is survived by 2 brothers, Andy (Gloria) and Bill (Carol). Pre-deceased was Peter’s brother Mike (Carol) who passed away in 2019.
Gerry was born in Saint John but moved to St. Stephen early in her life. She returned to Saint John to further her education, gaining her Certificate of Nursing. There she met Peter and soon they were married at St. Pius X Church in Saint John on October 15,1960. The newly married couple moved to Calgary, AB where all four of their children were born. Through many transfers, following Peter’s work, the family ended up in Toronto, Ontario in 1974. They lived in Toronto until their retirement in 1992 when they moved back to New Brunswick eventually settling in St. Stephen.
During this time Gerry and Peter enjoyed their retirement doing things they loved camping, bowling and of course pool for Peter, with his friends at Dooly’s. They just took it easy and enjoyed making new friends.
Their lives would take too long and there would be too much space to tell you about it. They were both great parents and the children have heard from everyone they knew in St Stephen about how great Gerry and Peter were.
At their request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A celebration of their lives will be held at a later date at Humphreys Funeral Home in St. Stephen.
For those who wish a remembrance, a donation to your favourite charity would be appreciated.
The Maher family would like to thank the Charlotte County Hospital, the nurses, the admin staff and the doctors for the amazing care that Gerry and Peter received during their time there. The nurses always took extra care to make both of them comfortable and kept in touch with the family and up to date on their condition and in touch in every way.
The family would also like to thank Travis, Kate, the staff and the residents at Shoreside Haven Long Term Care in Oak Bay, NB. They all took very good care of Mom and Dad in their final months.
Great thanks to Humphrey's Funeral Home (Andre LeClair) for their valuable assistance in helping the family deal with the complicated process after Mom and Dad passed.
We also want to thank our second family, Kathie and Bob Burnside, for their care they gave both our parents. They also housed and fed us when we came to see our mom and dad and always made us feel welcomed. So blessed to have them as friends.
