Obituary of Clare May Toyer
Toyer, Clare
A beloved resident of Grand Manan Island, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2024, surrounded by her family. Clare was known throughout the community for her unwavering kindness and dedication to the island she called home.
Born and raised in Nottingham, England, Clare came to Canada with her husband John, in 1968, first residing in Halifax, Nova Scotia and then eventually arriving in Grand Manan in 1976 as the owner and operator of the Shore Crest Lodge. It is here Clare would fall in love with the rustic beauty of the island and the overwhelming hospitality of the island's residents. Through her involvement with the Shore Crest Lodge, and later the Ferry Wharf Inn, Clare developed lifelong friendships and helped shape the island's reputation for welcoming tourists and supporting local businesses.
Clare will be remembered for her many dinner parties as well as her involvement with the community and the church. She was also an avid bridge player, always on the lookout for her next bridge game.
Clare is survived by her daughter Joanne Ingalls (Michael) of Grand Manan, NB, son David Toyer (Luisa) of Fredericton, NB, step daughter Christine Flemming (Philip) of Nova Scotia and step son Tony Toyer (Wendy) of BC, brother David (Mavis) of England, grandchildren, Zoe Ingalls, Olivia Ingalls, Melissa Toyer, step grandchildren…Ron Sherman, Gilbert Sherman, Justin Sherman, Will Sherman, Joe Flemming, Greg Flemming, Katrina Toyer, several great grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Clare was predeceased by her sister Iris DeBarr and brother in law Derek DeBarr.
By Clare’s request cremation will take place. A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held on Saturday August 3rd, 2024 at 4:00 pm at Grand Harbour Baptist Church (Community Life). Rev. Karl Ingersoll officiating. The interment will follow at North Head Cemetery.
