Obituary of Artje Ingalls

Due to inclement weather the funeral service for Artje was  rescheduled to 1:00PM on Tuesday November 28, 2023

with a period of visitation starting at 12:00 Noon at The North Head Baptist Church 

While there is much to celebrate about a long life well-lived, it is with sadness that the family announces the passing of Artje Mourik Ingalls at the Grand Manan Nursing Home on Thursday, Nov. 23 with her granddaughter Mandy at her side.

     Artje was born in Rotterdam to Allegonda van Ton and John van Mourik on May 21, 1924 and celebrated her first birthday just days after the family moved to Grand Manan and settled on Cheney’s Island. In May of this year she celebrated her 99th birthday.

     Besides her parents, Artje was predeceased by her brothers, John and Harry, sisters, Marie Fleet Russell and Johanna Morse, and sons, Gerald (Stub) and Albert.

    Artje was a strong independent woman who will be missed and fondly remembered not only by the family but by the many friends she made and those whose lives she touched through church and the various jobs she had over her life. She will perhaps be best remembered by most for her cooking. Her homemade bread was famously auctioned off during the annual Rotary Festival for many years, sometimes garnering $100 a loaf!

    Artje is survived by her brother Bill, her son Wayne (Judi), grandchildren Angela, Heidi, Dwight, Jayne, Jillian, Geoff and Mandy, several great and great-great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews, including special great-niece Jena.

   Many thanks to the staff of the Grand Manan Nursing Home for their loving care of Artje, and to the friends and family who were so attentive in her final days.

     Visitation took place on Tuesday November 28th from 12:00 to 1:00 at the North Head Baptist Church with the funeral service  immediately after.

   The interment followed at Maple Grove Cemetery.
