Obituary of Dr. Perry W. Spencer
SPENCER PERRY W. - At the Charlotte County Hospital on Friday, July 16th, 2021, Dr. Perry Weston Spencer, husband to Joanne Grace ( Thibault ) Spencer, of St. Stephen, NB. Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; he is the son of the late Dr. Earle Weston Spencer & Myrtle Lavina (Graham ) Spencer.
Surviving besides his wife Joanne are his children Perry EW of Toowoomba, Australia, Mark G. of Edmonton , AB, his daughter Jennifer M. Spencer (Ryan Haley) of St. Stephen, NB, one brother Lee (Bonnie) of Whiterock, BC, two sisters Gaye Ericksson of Edmonton, AB, Martha Woolaver (Lance) of Halifax, NS, one sister in law Lorraine Satchell of Ottawa, ON,grandchildren Mallory Stevens, Nolan Stevens, Lennox Haley and Ailsa Spencer - McDermid of Australia, , several nieces and nephews.
Perry was predeceased by his two brothers Earl and Robert.
Perry graduated from Digby Regional High School. He went on to take his undergraduate and medical degree at Dalhousie University. He set up his first practise in St. Stephen, in July 1977 and continued until his retirement in 2017. He had memberships in the College of Physicians of Canada,Canadian Medical Association, NB Medical Society and Canadian Federationof Teachers of Family Medicine.
He held positions in Department of Family Medicine, Dalhousie University 1982 – 2011, Assistant Professor, Department of Family Medicine, Dalhousie University 2011 – 2017, Clinical Assistant Professor, Memorial University, 2008 – 2017, Instructor, ACLS for Heart & Stroke Foundation, 1995 – 2015.
Other memberships include: Board of St. Croix Vocational Centre, St. Stephen; formerly the Sunshine Workshop 1977 – 1985;President of Board of St. Vocational Centre 1983 – 1985; member of the Kiwanis Club, St. Stephen, NB 1980 – 1987; member Board of Home Makers, St. Stephen, 1978 – 1995; President of Board of Home Makers 1992 – 1994.
Other medical committees, included Complaints Committee NB 1999 – 2015; Program Based Small Group, Foundation for Medical Education 1986 – 2015 and Facilitator 2001 – 2015;NANB Nurse Practioner Committees for NB 2001 – 2007.
Dr. Perry;s hospital appointments included Charlotte County Hospital; Secretary, Medical Staff; Chief of Staff, Vice President; Medical Quality and Resource Management Committee; Rural Obstetrics Committee.
Aside from Perry’s medical practise, he was also involved with Scouts Canada from 1987 – 2003,serving as Provincial Commissioner 1996 – 1999. He received Medal of Good Service (1990), Silver Acorn (2002).
Perry loved music, reading , history and travelling and his two westies Socrates and Maggie.
By Perrys request cremation will take place. The family will receive friends during a time of visitation at the funeral home on Friday, July 30th, 2021 from 2:00 pm – 4 :00 pm and 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm. For the visitation period, prescreening protocols will still be in place.
The funeral service in celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, July 31st, 2021 at 11:00 am in the chapel. Rev. Peter Fitch officiating. As this is the day to the beginning of the provinces reopening phase as we begin back in the green level and the emergency alert level and all its restrictions, to be lifted; preregistration to the service will not be required. For those feeling anxious, vulnerable or unwell you are still encouraged not to attend, either the visitation or service.
