Obituary of Alice Prescott Gough
WELSHPOOL – Alice Prescott Boyden Gough passed away on Wednesday, 14 June 2017, in the Saint John Regional Hospital, at age 99. She was born in Eastport, Maine, on 13 May 1918, daughter of Ira Delpha Boyden and Wilhelmina (née Golding) Boyden. Alice attended Shead High School in Eastport and St. Stephen Business College. In 1936 she married Joseph Gough and moved to Welshpool, Campobello Island. After two seasons of office work at Peacock’s factory in Eastport, she settled down to family and community work. She served many years on the Vestry of St. Anne’s Anglican Church, where she was also a member of the quilting Guild. She was long associated with the Campobello Board of Trade and its successor Chamber of Commerce. In the early 1970s she was highly active on Local Improvement Projects for Campobello. She helped create an island swimming pool and the Herring Cove Golf Course. She later worked 16 years as office manager at the Herring Cove Provincial Park. She was active in school-related matters, served on the School Board, and was also on the board of the Regional Medical Center in Lubec from its inception until recent years. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star chapter in Lubec. She helped generate the “Co-Op” store and the Lupine Lodge, predecessor to the Fireside Restaurant at the Roosevelt Campobello International Park. She was also a founding member of the Friars Bay Development Association, a volunteer group re-activating Welshpool Wharf and Hall. She was an endless activist, promoter, and advocate for Campobello. In recognition of her contributions, in 2012 she received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Alice was predeceased by her husband Joseph, in 1985, by her sisters Mary (Boyden) Morse, Helen and Ruth Boyden, her step-sister Ruth (McCarthy) Lank, her step-brothers, Harold and Frederick McCarthy, and her daughter-in-law, Cavell (Newman) Gough. She was also predeceased by all her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. She is survived by sons Joseph Jr. (Marie McCormack) and Stephen (Cindy Merriam) and daughter Mary Helen (Ulysse) Robichaud; by grandchildren Nicholas (Saccha), Lisa, Jesse, and Étienne (Courtney Johnson) Robichaud, Adam and Patrick Gough, Stephanie, Taylor and Kali Gough, Tracee (Tom) Newcomb, and Jason and Kevin Watters; and by great-granddaughter Ellis Robichaud. She also leaves her nieces and nephews who all have fond memories of summer visits to Aunt Alice's. The family wish to thank the devoted caregivers on Campobello who helped take care of Alice during her decline in recent years. She enjoyed their company, and her remarkable mind, memory, and wit survived to the end. Funeral services were held at St. Anne’s Anglican Church on Saturday, 17 June 2017. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
