Obituary of Mabel Alice Gowan
Gowan, Mabel A. passed peacefully at the Passamaquoddy Lodge, St. Andrews, NB on Thursday, February 27,th 2014: Mabel Alice Gowan, widow of Manley H. Gowan, formally of 163 Parr Street, St. Andrews. Born in Bayside NB on November 6, 1920, she was the daughter of Albert E. and Florence (Roberts) Greenlaw. Mabel is survived by her children Joan Mitchell of St. Stephen, NB, Dennis (Deana) of Mayfield, NB, Christopher of St. Andrews, Kelley Gowan of New Maryland ; sister Lois Cleghorn of St. Stephen, NB; 9 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins. Mabel was predeceased by a sister, Eileen Jackson and brother, Albert James Greenlaw. Mabel’s greatest love was her family. She spent many hours of her time supporting her children and grandchildren in their many endeavors. She especially liked cooking and often had a grandchild helping to mix and stir one of her recipes or new culinary creation. She enjoyed knitting, reading and in her younger years loved to dance. Mabel spent many seasons at her cottage on Chamcook Lake where she enjoyed swimming, boating, canoeing and entertaining family and friends. There she loved to work in her flower garden which blossomed at her special touch. Mabel was a past member of Algonquin Chapter # 20, OES in St. Andrews. Mabel was an avid curler, a member of the Heather Curling Club. Mabel’s love of curling led to coaching the Sir James Dunn Academy girls curling for nearly a decade. A victory in the New Brunswick High School Curling Championship of 1971 allowed Mabel to take the team to the Canada Winter Games in Saskatoon, Sask. the same year. Mabel’s sharp wit, wonderful sense of humour and friendship won the hearts of all who knew her. She will be missed by all. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Passamaquoddy Lodge for their kindness and excellent care during Mom’s stay this past year. By Mabel’s request, there will be no visitation. A memorial service as a celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, March 8th at All Saints Anglican Church, King Street, St. Andrews, NB at 2:00 PM. A reception will follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Cancer Society, Heart Foundation or charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
