Obituary of Calvin Hood
James Calvin Hood April 26, 1959 – April 17, 2018 Passed away at his home in Bayside on the St. Croix River at 58 years of age. Calvin was born in North Sydney, Cape Breton, and was predeceased by his parents, Donald and Beatrice (Forrest) Hood. He is survived by one brother, Carmen (Kathy, late) and four sisters; Donna (George, late) his twin sister Corinne (Albert Gracie), Nadine and Arlene (David Carter). Calvin lived most of his childhood in Patterson, NJ, returning to his Cape Breton home during the summer months and to complete his early education. Calvin celebrated 35 years of marriage to Holly (Sampson). They had one daughter, Cara Mehlenbacher who gave them Hailey Jade as their first grandchild. Their son Aaron and his wife Cherie blessed them with two more grandchildren; Brynlee Irene and Sullivan (Sulley) Charles. Calvin’s children and grandchildren were his joy. Calvin was a much loved son of his late in – laws, Arnold and Nadine Sampson. He was brother – in – law to Neil and Judy, Tom and Judy, and Lisa. Calvin was also predeceased by two young nephews, Douglas Gracie and Kyle Sampson. He was a loving uncle to many nieces and nephews. As a young boy at youth camp in upstate New York, Calvin was overwhelmed by Christ’s love for him. It was life changing. As a result, Calvin spent the majority of his life in ministry to others. He worked at Word of Life Camp in Owen Sound, ON, and at River of Life Camp in Maine. He graduated from New Brunswick Bible Institute in Hartland, NB and later worked at NBBI as Alumni Director and faculty. He pastored churches in Nova Scotia, Maine, Ontario and New Brunswick. Calvin brought joy and encouragement to all who had the privilege of meeting him. He was a friend to young and old. He and his alter ego, Camper Joe, had the unique ability to break down barriers and make people laugh. He was a living example of Proverbs 18:24 “ a man that has friends must show himself friendly….” Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Calvin’s life on Saturday, April 21st, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Union Street Baptist Church, St. Stephen, NB. A reception will immediately follow in the church hall. The interment will take place at a later date in St. Andrews Rural Cemetery. The family will receive friends during a time of visitation at the funeral home on Friday evening from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care and direction of Humphreys Funeral Home, 20 Marks Street, St. Stephen, NB E3L 2B2 (506 – 466 – 3110). Donations to fund needy campers to Word of Life Camp, Owen Sound, ON, or Living Waters Camp, Danforth, Maine, would be appreciated by the family and in keeping with Calvin’s passion.
