Obituary of Roland David Smith
SMITH, ROLAND D. – Peacefully at the Charlotte County Hospital on Friday, October 3, 2025, Roland David Smith, beloved husband of 64 years to Gertrude Mae Smith of St. Stephen, NB.
Born in Toronto, ON; he was the son of the late Ernest Henry and Ada Smith.
Roland and Gertrude’s story began when they were just fifteen years old at the local theatre. Roland wanted to share a seat beside Gertrude — and Gertrude wanted a popcorn. One small exchange became the beginning of a lifetime together. From that moment on, they shared a seat beside each other for the rest of his life.
Roland proudly served with the Canadian Armed Forces (Navy) for 28 years, stationed in several areas across Canada. He was deeply proud of his military service and the friendships and memories it brought.
Roland was a cook in the Navy and we were all proud of him for it. No one could peek over your shoulder quite like he could when you were in the kitchen. If he allowed you in his kitchen, you knew it was a privilege — and you also knew better than to pick at the turkey before dinner was ready. No one salted a plate quite like he did, or carved a prime rib with such care. Cooking was his way of showing love, and every meal he made carried a piece of that.
He may not have remembered everyone in the end, but we’ll always remember him — for his quick wit, his loyalty, his honesty, and the love tucked behind every joking remark.
Surviving, in addition to his wife Gertrude, are his three sons: David (Cassie) of St. Stephen, NB; Greg (Mona Liza) of Kingston, NS; and Jody (Wendy Ann) of Dartmouth, NS; along with ten grandchildren — Jessica, Kayla, Tara, Ryan, Clarissa, Celine, Anthony, Courtney, Jordan, and Mitchell — as well as several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Roland was born and raised in a large family of 13 siblings. He is survived by his brother Roy Benjamin of ON, and three sisters: Linda Mitchell (Bob) of Oshawa, ON; Faye Harkness (Bruce) of Kingston, ON; and Debbie Emmons of Oshawa, ON.
By Roland’s request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held later in October at Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery, Yarmouth, NS.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Charlotte County Hospital Foundation or a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family. Online condolences or donations can be made at www.humphreysfh.com.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care and direction of Humphreys Funeral Home, 20 Marks Street, St. Stephen, NB E3L 2B2 (506-466-3110).
Forever loved, forever remembered. The kitchen will never be the same without you.
